“It sounds prideful, but it’s not. I just… I have proof—real, tangible proof—that I can make a difference. If I just go back to being the girl that ran away from Waterdeep after that, then it’ll just eat away at me until there’s nothing left.”

Biography

“When asked about her past, OPHYSIA regales you with colorful stories of her exploits north of Baldur’s Gate, from battles against impossible odds to daring escapes—all of which she assures you are completely true. From what you can gather, she originally hails from Waterdeep, the City of Splendors, but becomes uncharacteristically quiet when prompted on it, preferring to direct the conversation towards her current home of Daggerford.

When profits from spinning tales wears thin, Ophysia takes to the road to find new ones—preferring to do so in the company of traveling merchants who will pay for her sword arm, if not her company.

Apparently mercenary work has been sparse for those not interested in banditry, so Ophysia has ventured south to take matters into her own hands and put an end to the issues that plague the Sword Coast. She appears to be a strong-willed young woman, if a bit overconfident.”

Overview

A self-proclaimed warrior-storyteller, Ophysia has journeyed to Nashkel to do her part in stopping the increased bandit activity that plagues the Coast Way. While she masks many of her vulnerabilities with teasing nonchalance, she’s driven by a deep-seated desire to do good in the world and live life to the fullest.

Ophysia can be found in the Belching Dragon Tavern in Nashkel, sharing tales and drinks with her fellow patrons. In Siege of Dragonspear, she can be recruited in the city of Baldur’s Gate.

Friendship & Romance

In BG:EE there is a friendship track for Ophysia spanning 9 conversations with the player character. There is a lot of opportunity for playful banter, and she enjoys a battle of wits on occasion — just be sure not to take it too far.

In Siege of Dragonspear, Ophysia has 4 friendship conversations, and 3 additional romance conversations exclusively for female PCs who do not commit outright evil acts, as well as a visit in the epilogue.

Banters & Conflict

Ophysia has a total of 55 banters in BG:EE and one per companion in SoD. She has a conflict with Eldoth which forces an ultimatum after their fourth banter, but they can be convinced to stay in the right circumstances.

Likes: Alora, Branwen, Faldorn, Glint, Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Minsc, M’Khiin, Neera, Rasaad, Skie, Xan.

Dislikes: Dorn, Baeloth, Eldoth, Kivan, Montaron, Safana, Tiax, Xzar.

FAQ

Q: What versions of Baldur’s Gate does this mod work with?
A: Only Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition v2.5 and later has been tested.

Q: Is the mod EET compatible?
A: Yes, thanks to the work of morpheus562.

Q: Do I need Siege of Dragonspear to play this?
A: No! While the expansion is quite important to Ophysia’s character, she is still a feature-complete companion without it.

Q: Does Ophysia have interjections?
A: Yes — interjections are included as a modular option.

Q: Does Ophysia have any conflicts?
A: Ophysia and Eldoth will eventually come to (verbal) blows and you will be forced to choose between one of them — unless Skie is present, or the PC has high Charisma.

Q: Does this mod include any quests?
A: Not as of right now. The mod is complete without quests.

Q: Does Ophysia have player-initiated dialogue?
A: No.

Q: Where do I contact you about bugs or typos?
A: Contact me on the Beamdog Forums or c0mment below!

Firstly, congrats on the release! I was looking forward to this since you mention it a while ago.

Wasn’t expecting a Bard, which is a nice surprise, it’s been a while we got Bard npc, and not some super dual-wielder.

I haven’t finished the game with her yet, too eager to drop the comment first.

So, I like the writing so far, story wise she’s believable enough. Kinda self-proclaimed skald indeed, but believable enough. Comparing her to other npc mods out there she’s above average in this respect, pretty much on the level of “jastey” npc’s or Rhaella’s. Audiovisual aspects, as portrait and voice-set are top tier also, better than most, very enjoyable overall.

My word of criticism would be the illegal choice of proficiency for her. The 2 pips in bastard sword and buckler thing, it’s not only illegal but unnecessary. Bards are never front liners, their job is to sing songs and hold the rods. If you were aspiring to make some sort of norse-lady, why not just barbarian or fighter/druid or something in those lines? (after a while, I shadow-keeper’ed her to my liking, giving her 1pip in sling and sword and shield, I hope you don’t mind :))

Also, despite her being Skald, it felt she’s too polite and too timid at times. I’d like her to be more edgy. No one likes the lukewarm tea. It’s either ice cold or steaming hot. The same goes with personalities in fiction i think. Do not try to please everybody, because it won’t be memorable enough in the end. It’s better to be extreme and find your crowd I’d say.

Despite those little issues, I enjoyed her immensely, and I’m hoping for some cross mod content with other NPCs. I just hope in BG2 portion she will grow and gain some character, because she deserves recognition.

    -8/10

PS. I’ve noticed you have a unique charname portraits in your reviews as well. Do you make them yourself? If yes, can you share your gallery?

Thanks for your kind words! I greatly appreciate you trying the mod out and for the generous score 🙂 As for your criticism, I hear you, but illegal features are all over the place on BG1 NPCs — it’s part of their charm, in my opinion. And I think bards standing around singing and using wands is… boring, so I wanted to try something different. If it doesn’t work for you, you’re very welcome to change it — but I enjoy using her that way. She is the way she is because that’s the character I wanted to create and no other reason. If you want something a little edgier, you’ll have to wait until her BG2 continuation!

Also, if my reviews aren’t enough of an indication that I’m not trying to please anyone, I don’t know what is 😉

One of the first things I do with NPC mods is open up their audio folder to get a small preview of some of the barks – not because I value voice acting as a top priority, but rather because I feel bad voice acting is worse than no voice acting! To that end, I really have to commend Ophysia’s voice actress on the quality of their recording.

I’ll definitely be using Ophysia for my next BG1 playthrough! Review to be continued 🙂

Definitely will include this mod in my next bg1 playthrough. Btw I really like her portrait, did you draw it yourself?

Thanks! The portrait is actually AI-generated but very heavily edited in Photoshop. Most of the custom portraits you’ll see on here were generated by Midjourney amidst a time in which I was experimenting with the software. I’m hoping to be able to commission some proper artwork for her sooner or later. I hope you enjoy Ophysia when you get around to it!
