BG:EE NPC Revamp

This is an in-development mod exclusively for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. It aims to add depth to the companions in the game with all new interparty banter, quests, expansions to existing quests, interjections, and player-talks.

The BG:EE Revamp currently has content for two companions out of twenty-nine.

Overview

The BG:EE NPC Revamp starts from ground zero — it assumes that you have no other mods installed that expand or add content to companions.

This adds new companion-quests that are built upon pre-existing building blocks within the game, giving them character arcs with highs and lows that both the player and the other companions can react to. Quests already associated with companions, like Minsc, Coran, and Kivan, will receive deeper interactivity to better reflect their personal stakes and to give the player a chance to reflect their own thoughts. Some locations will receive expansions to facilitate quests, like the Temple of Helm in Baldur’s Gate, and Kagain’s shop in Beregost.

Every companion will receive banter with one another. Multi-NPC banters (requiring three or more companions) are included for every joinable NPC.

Interjections throughout the entire game from every companion will be available as an optional component. Companions will initiate dialogue with the player à la Baldur’s Gate II based on in-game time and events.

The point of this mod is to enrich the experience of playing Baldur’s Gate for myself and those willing to give this mod a try. Content is only included if it genuinely enhances the experience, and I have no qualms with cutting elements entirely or reshaping them until it does meet my and the players’ standards.

Content to be implemented at release

  • Two on-the-road conversations with Coran.
  • Four on-the-road conversations with Ajantis.
  • A companion quest for Ajantis that begins when the player enters northern Baldur’s Gate.
  • Enhanced reactivity and player involvement in Coran’s quests: ‘Coran the Wyvern Hunter’ and ‘Brielbara’s Baby’.
  • Banters between Coran and every joinable companion, plus unique post-quest banters
  • Banters between Ajantis and every joinable companion, plus unique post-quest banters.
  • Two new shopkeepers added to support companion-related content — one in the Temple of Helm, and one in the Undercellar.

Planned Content

  • 700+ inter-party banters.
  • 5+ on-the-road conversations with every companion.
  • Companion interjections throughout the story.
  • New quest for Branwen, hunting down more members of Tranzig’s former troup.
  • New quest for Garrick, when he’s recognised in the Elfsong Tavern.
  • New quest for Kagain, dealing with different issues in his mercenary business.
  • New quest for Khalid & Jaheira, working with the Harpers through Entillis Fulsom.
  • New quest for Montaron & Xzar, a chance to willingly work for the Zhentarim.
  • New quest for Yeslick, dealing with the fallout of flooding the Cloakwood Mines.
  • New mini-quest for Imoen, reminiscing in Candlekeep library.
  • Extended quest for Faldorn, toppling the Iron Throne after clearing the mines.
  • Expanded player-interaction during the quests: ‘Khalid and Jaheira’, ‘Xzar and Montaron’, ‘Entar’s Son’, ‘Rescuing Dynaheir’, ‘Edwin and Dynaheir’, ‘Kivan and Tazok’, ‘Safana’s Treasure Hunt’, and ‘Eldoth and Skie’.
  • New lines and dialogue in Siege of Dragonspear to reflect new potential events and relationships.
  • … And more!

FAQ

Q: What versions of Baldur’s Gate does this mod work with?
A: Only Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition v2.6.6 and later has been tested.

Q: Will there be romances?
A: No, and that is unlikely to change. There may be some characters that will possibly flirt and agree to a one-night stand, but it won’t go any further than that.

Q: Will every companion receive a quest?
A: Some companions will receive expanded/extended content for their existing quests, rather than full new questlines — at least at this point in development.

Q: Will there be new voiced lines?
A: Unless I choose to pay for voice-acting or repurpose existing lines, then no. I will not use AI-voicing for this mod.

Q: Is the mod EET compatible?
A: I am not taking any special steps to make the mod EET compatible yet.

Q: Is this mod related to the BG1 NPC Project?
A: No, beyond a similar name.

Q: Do I need Siege of Dragonspear to play this?
A: No.

Q: Where do I contact you about bugs or typos?
A: Contact me on the Beamdog Forums or c0mment below!

Oooh it all sounds so great. I really look forward to trying this. The BG1 NPC Project is unfortunately mostly not to my taste, and it’s hard to get banters/interjections for the regular NPCs without it.

An alternative to BG NPC Project – now there’s an ambitious undertaking. I hope you’ll succeed though. It would give me reasons to start and complete few more playthroughs, and one cannot play Baldur’s Gate enough 🙂

Your review of the NPC Project – and some of your critiques of other mods as well, even those you’ve generally reviewed favorably – has me really excited about this, given your emphasis on clear, mature writing and stylistic consistency with the original game(s).

Looking forward to the eventual release, and will certainly do my part to help out with testing and proofreading feedback when it drops. Good luck!

How soon is “coming soon”? Should I hold off on starting a new game until it’s released?

It’s hard to say exactly. Before the end of July is my current guess. If you did want to wait, just a reminder that there will only be content available for Ajantis and Coran at launch. Don’t let me stop you from enjoying the game in the meantime!

I am very happy you reconsidered and are now making such a mod.
(see my original comment from 20th Nov 2023, in case you do not remember me)

Anyway, great news, to quote Wolfenstein, I am psyched 🙂

To be honest with you, that exact comment sat in my mind for about a year before I started work on this project. It was certainly one of the initial factors that inspired me!

While I modded different games than BG, I did mod a lot myself… So, its fair to say that I hoped for exactly that when I wrote my comment.
Mission accomplished 🙂 Eagerly awaiting your work.

I saw you got to version 0.1.0, woo! I agree with your feedback on BGNPC and would like something much more subtle

Are you going to incorporate mods like Chatty Imoen, Neera Expansion and Siege of Dragonspear Dialogue Banters into this one?

Given that they are not my mods, no.

Greetings. It’s me again. I wanted to ask you a few more questions regarding this mod:

    1. Are there going to be a few unique class based interactions with companion NPC’s (for example unique banter with Viconia if you play as a Dark Moon Monk)?

    2. I wasn’t around when the original drama surounding SoD started but apparently Safana’s writer in that expansion dismissed her as “just a sex object” and gave her more of a mean girl persona in an attempt to “improve” her. But I do think that a character who knows how to weaponize her femininity to manipulate men (and some women I guess) in order to make them do whatever she wants and to then ditch them with all their luxuries in her pockets when she no longer needs them, could actually have a lot of potential. Or if nothing else, be very entertaining to have around. And since I know that you are planning to take SoD into account, I wanted to ask if you are planning to lean into that fem fatale archetype a bit more or if you’d at the very least be open to the idea? I’m not asking for nor expecting a full-on rewrite but I would still like to see a little tweak

    3. I know you said you wouldn’t incorporate any other mods into this one but is there a chance that Chatty Imoen at least will be compatible with NPC Revamp once it is finished?

    4. BG2’s Unfinished Business Mod has two components that install two cut Ranger kits: the Justifier and the Feralan. I don’t think that they were part of the first game however and I don’t know of any mods that add them to BG1 either. Which is why I wanted to know if you’d be open to adding them to NPC Revamp?

    5. I’ll admit, this is a lot more of a request than a question. More so than point 2, which admittedly, does come off as more of a demand (though I’m not entirely sure how to word it differently). But could you please use the opportunity to make Neera’s personality a bit more… bearable? She isn’t as bad BG2 admittedly, but in GB1, I honestly always had the feeling as I am constantly walking on egg shells when interacting with her. Pick one “wrong” dialogue option, even if ain’t particularily mean, and she just explodes at you out of nowhere. Not to mention the way she acts at the end of her questline. She shows zero gratitude for helping her find Adoi. And rewards your best efforts with a rude, sarcastic remark, simply because she ain’t fond of that belt (“Oh, of course you helped. I haven’t forgotten that it’s all about YOU!“). I dunno if you agree or not but I do think that she could use at least a few adjustments in how she is presented in the first game. Because as it stands, I can’t say that I am too surprised that her inclusion was so polarising at first. Least of all when nobody, neither PC nor companion, seems to be allowed to at least call her out on her behavior
